I think a lot of the problem stems from the fact that the DC Universe wasn’t created to be a universe at all, so it’s a patchwork of different things haphazardly glued together on the fly. That creates problems, and every attempt to fix those problems over the years has just resulted in more problems. Some of that may be that, institutionally, DC has a very deep-seeded dissatisfaction with some of its characters and its universe as a whole, whereas Marvel is very comfortable with its universe and characters. At both companies, aspects of the world and the characters can change, but Marvel is never trying to fix the bedrock, so it’s more like rearranging furniture or a new paint job. DC keeps trying to dynamite their foundations to build a completely different structure.
This is very spot on.
